English singer-songwriter Jessie J has provided a promising update regarding her ongoing battle with breast cancer, revealing that recent tests have confirmed her cancer has not spread beyond its original site.

The 37-year-old artist took to Instagram on Monday, July 7, where she fought back tears while sharing an emotional video of her teaching her son, Sky, how to say, "Mommy's gonna be OK," just hours before her scheduled surgery.

“And ... I AM OK,” Jessie J wrote in the caption.

“Results = I have NO cancer spread. Happy tears are real." The singer expressed her appreciation for the outpouring of love and support she has received during this challenging time, stating, “Thank YOU for the prayers, the love, the well wishes, the joy and all the positive energy.”

Describing her son as her "biggest ray of light", Jessie J shared how his presence has helped her maintain hope amidst the darkness.

“With you in my life, the darkness will never win,” she added. Although she acknowledged that her journey is far from over, with additional healing and surgery still required, she encouraged a sense of gratitude for the progress she has made so far.

In June, Jessie J opened up about her diagnosis in an emotional Instagram video, explaining her initial hesitation to go public with her health struggles.

Ultimately, she decided it was essential to share her journey with the fans who have loved her through thick and thin.

“Honestly, I need to process it and talk about it and I need a hug,” she reflected at the time.

She has made it a point to openly document both the highs and lows of her health adventure, sharing numerous hospital photos and expressing solidarity with those facing their own battles.

On June 27, Jessie J clarified that while she hoped for positive news regarding her health, the complexities of the cancer journey meant she would remain patient and realistic.

“I pray it will be true soon,” she wrote, emphasising that recovery from such an illness is not always straightforward.

This latest health update comes after Jessie J revealed to BBC Radio 2 that she had turned down a significant opportunity to perform on Broadway as Sally Bowles in "Cabaret”.

With her son still very young, she felt it was not the right time to take on such a demanding role. “I will do it at some point, and it was an amazing audition process,” she remarked, expressing pride in her accomplishments and her theatre background.

Jessie J has faced numerous health challenges throughout her life, including a heart condition during childhood, a stroke in her teenage years, and temporary hearing loss from Ménière's disease in 2020.

Last year, she also revealed her diagnosis of ADHD and OCD, further highlighting her resilient spirit.

The conversation around breast cancer awareness is more critical than ever.

Dr Peter Schoub, chair of the Breast Imaging Society of South Africa (BISSA) and a leading expert in the field, warns that breast cancer can often be undetected in the lives of countless women, waiting to strike when least expected.

“Early detection is the beacon of hope,” he stated, noting that it not only enhances survival chances but also mitigates the necessity for aggressive treatments that can inflict both physical and emotional distress.

Schoub highlighted the alarming issue of late-stage breast cancer diagnoses in South Africa, attributing it to a mix of low awareness, limited healthcare access, and socio-economic disparities.

“Although most major medical schemes provide complimentary mammogram screenings yearly to women over 40, only about 20% take advantage of this service,” he explained.

In light of Jessie J’s update, those affected by breast cancer are reminded that recognising symptoms early is crucial.

By educating themselves about the signs of breast cancer - ranging from lumps to subtle skin changes - women and their families can take proactive steps.

Understanding and acting on these signs could mean the difference between life and death, making time an essential factor in the fight against this disease.

Here are some lesser-known signs that should prompt further investigation:

  • Unexplained changes in the skin: Look for alterations unrelated to normal breast tissue changes, such as swelling, redness or a texture resembling that of an orange peel.
  • Nipple discharge: A clear or bloody discharge that occurs without squeezing the nipple should be discussed with a healthcare professional.
  • Persistent pain: While breast pain is often dismissed, any new or unusual pain that persists should warrant a medical consultation.
  • Changes in breast shape: Subtle alterations in the visual appearance of breasts, even without a lump, could be indicative of underlying issues.
  • Swollen lymph nodes: Noticeable lumps or swelling in the armpit or neck that do not resolve can suggest that cancer has spread.
