On Monday, Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe and Tobias Mugabe Matonhodze appeared in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on attempted murder and firearm-related charges.

The pair may be facing serious charges of attempted murder, defeating the ends of justice and unlawful possession of a firearm, but attention has been drawn to what Chatunga wore in court.

Chatunga, 28, is the youngest son of former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe and in court, he wore a black padded wool jacket. One might take it as a simple jacket, but fashion lovers found that Chatunga was wearing a Moncler padded wool jacket and it has quite the price tag.

On the Moncler website, the padded wool zip-up hoodie worn by Chatunga costs $1,330.00 (R21 150,92).

The R21 150,92 price tag has tongues wagging. A jacket that is almost the same as an ordinary South African’s salary.

In recent times, South Africa has seen high-end fashion brands during court appearances of controversial figures. Prison escapee Thabo Bester had many wagging with his fashion choices from Burberry to Louis Vuitton (LV).

Alleged criminal mastermind Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala has also grabbed the spotlight because of his designer wear, dripped in Burberry, Dolce & Gabbana tuxedos, and R2.5 million Rolex watches, for court appearances.

For those with significant wealth, simple, humble attire for court appearances appears to be out of fashion.

Chatunga and his co-accused, Tobias Mugabe Matonhodze, have been remanded in custody, with the matter postponed to March 3.

The charges arise from an incident in which a 23-year-old employee at a Hyde Park residence was shot and left in a critical condition.
