WHAT has been the highlight of recent times?

The birth of my boy Jack, because I am just about mature enough to handle a baby.

What is your favourite Durban restaurant, shop, mall and local leisure activity?

Circus Circus, Basil Manning, Musgrave Centre and fishing in the dams in the area.

What is the movie you most enjoyed in the past 12 months? And what is your favourite film of all time?

Body of Lies– because it’s real, based on the stuff that goes on every day. My all-time favourite movie is Men in Black.

What album is in your CD player – and why? And your most cherished album of all time?

I am listening to Roy Orbison’s Black and White Nights, because rock ’n’ roll is timeless. Most cherished albums? The Beatles’s entire collection.

Favourite kind of meal? And least favourite?

Love a good curry! Hate a bad curry!

How do you keep fit?

Paddling in my canoe, fishing and running after my six kids.

The three best things that make South Africa great?

The ability of us South Africans to laugh about ourselves, with ourselves. Also love the sunshine. And everyone is friendly.

The word or phrase you most overuse?

K*k.

What one thing about yourself you would love to change (and why)?

The strength to lose weight and keep it off, because I am too fat.

How and where did you celebrate your last birthday? And when is your birthday?

January 19. I celebrated it at home with my family.

Dream holiday? And with whom (and why), if it could be a fantasy date?

A trip down the Nile with my wife, Sandy. It is something I have always wanted to do.

If you could be an animal, what would it be?

A dolphin, because they are the most elegant creatures on Earth.

Personalities you most admire – and why?

The late Paul Newman, because he didn’t let anybody interfere with his private life. That was his choice.

Also, Neil Andrews. He is one of the most recognisable faces in South Africa, yet he’s one of the most humble people I’ve ever met.

Six things you truly love? And six things you detest?

I love my six kids: Tracy, Bradley, Jami, Robin, Tyler and Jack. I detest false people, unscrupulous business people and agents, people who park in parking spots for the disabled, people who assume they are superior to others… and spinach!

What is the funniest thing that ever happened to you?

Are you kidding? My whole life is a joke.

Name your favourite actor, actress, author, singer, band and TV show.

Gene Hackman, Helen Hunt, Dan Brown, Frank Sinatra, The Eagles and The Unit.

Three things you simply have to do before you die?

I want to go to India. I want to go to Egypt. And, lastly, I want to go to church.

What are you reading at the moment?

My computer screen.

Your favourite cities?

Port Elizabeth, because I feel at peace here; Cairo, because I have always wanted to go there; and Amsterdam, because the people are free.

List five things about yourself most people don’t know (even if they are really trivial).

My first name is David. I am a softie. I am completely and utterly useless with money. I am claustrophobic. And did I say I was mad about curries?
