TOP South African gymnast Caitlin Rooskrantz walked away with a gold medal in the bar event at this year’s FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup held in Cairo from March 17 to 20.
More than 17 countries participated in the competition, showcasing the best in male and female artistic gymnastics.
South Africa’s Naveen Daries also performed well by consistently placing among the top eight in the world on three apparatus.
Gymnastics South Africa said the two gymnasts began the season with stellar performances. The head coach of Gymnastics South Africa, Ilse Pelser, said Rooskrantz had improved from her qualification positions on bar from third to first position, and on the beam from seventh to sixth.
Pelser said Daries placed fifth in the bar and beam, and eighth in the floor final, with clean routines on the beam and floor.
“The pressure at an international competition is always a little more intense, but it was nice to see South African girls in the top eight, consistently and at the top of Africa,” said the coach. Pelser added that South Africa’s top gymnasts were showing that they could hold their own against high quality competitors.
“Our next target will be the African Championship taking place in Cairo, followed by the World Challenge Cup in Varna, Bulgaria,” she said.
