Suspect who allegedly stole 3 safes and jewellery from a PMB home was arrested in Isipingo, some items found in Umlazi

Durban - A suspect appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of burglary and theft after he allegedly broke into a home in Hayfields and stole three safes and jewellery.

Shaheen Suleiman, the owner of Magma Security, said the house breaking incident occurred on Saturday, July 2, between 4-6pm.

Suleiman said Magma Security and Investigations was requested to assist with the investigation.

He said a blue Subaru was identified as the vehicle involved in the crime.

“On 2022/07/07 in the afternoon the vehicle was spotted by Magma investigation members in the Durban area,” he said.

Magma members and Alexandra Road detectives proceeded to the area where the vehicle was intercepted, he said

“One suspect was arrested and in the vehicle jewellery taken during the housebreaking was recovered,” said Suleiman.

Suleiman added that a follow up investigation was done by Magma members and Alexandra Road detectives which led the teams to the Umlazi Area where further exhibits were recovered.

He said the exhibits were booked into Alexandra Road SAPS and the suspect was detained at Pietermaritzburg SAPS.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala said the 35-year-old suspect was traced and arrested in Isipingo.

“It is alleged by the complainant that on 2 July 2022 , she left her house at Hayfields with windows and doors locked. When she returned in the afternoon, she noticed that her house was broken into and the burglar gate was forced open. Upon checking, she noticed that three safes were stolen and jewellery was taken,” said Gwala.

Gwala said charges of burglary and theft are being investigated by Alexandra Road SAPS.

She said the suspect appeared before the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
