Durban - Dr Andri Barnes will retire as the principal of Glenwood High School at the end of September after taking the helm in 2017.
In an announcement on Monday, the school said Barnes took the reins of an “unsteady carriage” about five years ago and broke the glass ceiling by becoming the first female principal of a traditional boys school in South Africa.
“Dr Barnes has successfully balanced Glenwood High School and poised the school to step with confidence into this new chapter of its history,” said the school.
It said the process of recruiting a new principal was rigorous and intensive.
“We are excited to announce the appointment of our new headmaster, Mr Pierre Jacobs, who will assume office from the start of term 4 in 2022,” said the school.
Jacobs is leaving his position as senior deputy headmaster of Queens College in Eastern Cape.
Glenwood said Jacobs's previous position, held since 2014, has given him a broad base of experience.
“His role at Queens has given Mr Jacobs a broad base of experience with academic, sport, leadership, and strategic management portfolios under his care, making him uniquely suited for his new role as headmaster of Glenwood High School,” the school said.
Jacobs has a national diploma in sport management, national professional diploma in education and an advanced certificate in education, all from the North-West University.
The school said Jacobs, his wife Lizelle and their two young sons will soon be relocating from Eastern Cape.
“We join the entire Glenwood community in welcoming them to our neighbourhood.”
