A massive police raid at Fairvale Secondary School in Wentworth on Friday led to the discovery of a large consignment of illegal substances and cash.
More than 60 police officers carried out the operation, confiscating vapes, cigarettes, sharp scissors, pocket knives, pain medication, and some unknown pills. The raid was launched in response to reports of violence and drug-related activities within the school.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Education, Sipho Hlomuka, commended the South African Police Service (SAPS) for their swift and effective response. The search and seizure operation aimed to restore a safe and drug-free learning environment for both pupils and educators.
Mr Hlomuka said the Department of Education would not allow anyone to jeopardise pupils’ futures.
“We will not idly stand by while drugs and illegal activities threaten the safety and education of our children,” he stated.
The MEC urged parents and guardians to actively monitor their children’s activities.
“We ask that parents be intentional about ensuring that their children stay away from the use of illegal substances and any criminal activities. The safety and well-being of our learners require a joint effort between the Department, law enforcement, and families,” Mr Hlomuka added.
