Ferrel Govender, a former security boss, was again denied bail by the Durban Magistrate's Court on Thursday morning.

The court ruled that the interests of justice strongly outweigh any factors favouring his release.

Govender and his brother, Darren, are charged with the murder of businessman Shailen Singh, who was fatally shot in broad daylight on December 29, 2024, at Meridian Drive in Umhlanga. Investigators found 14 spent cartridges at the crime scene.

This marks the fourth time that Ferrel has been refused bail. His initial application was denied by the Magistrate's Court earlier this year, followed by unsuccessful appeals to Judge Mfuniselwa Nkosi and the Supreme Court of Appeal.

He then returned to the Magistrate's Court with new facts, but Magistrate K Bruorton again dismissed the application, stating: "There are no exceptional circumstances which, in the interests of justice, permit his release."

In contrast, Darren was granted R200,000 bail earlier this year. The two brothers are scheduled to appear for a pre-trial conference on January 22, 2026.
