Four men were shot dead in a bloody late-afternoon rampage in Gqeberha's Walmer township on Tuesday, with gunmen striking at three different locations within minutes.
Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa said the shootings happened at about 5.30pm.
She said the shootings are believed to have been carried out by a group of three or more suspects who opened fire at three separate spots in the township.
Mawisa said officers were still piecing together what led to the violence.
“At the moment, police can confirm that four adult males were shot and killed, allegedly by a group of three or more suspects, on three incident scenes,” Mawisa said.
She said the motive for the shootings is not yet known.
"As soon as we get facts, a media statement will be issued shortly," she said.
In an unrelated incident, late on Sunday night, a 39-year-old man was found lying in Mankazana Street, also in Walmer, with multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body.
“A murder case has been opened for investigation,” police spokesman Captain Andre Beetge said.
In the early hours of Monday, Beetge said police discovered three more bodies in Ndlovu Street, Airport Valley — a 37-year-old man and two women, aged 28 and 17 — also shot in the upper body.
He said the incident occurred at around 2am.
"Police were alerted to three bodies that were found," he said.
"[The victims] were found lying in the street with several gunshot wounds to their upper bodies.
“The motive for these murders is currently being investigated.
“A murder case with three counts has been opened and is being investigated by the Provincial Serious Violent Crime Investigation Unit.”
