Three people were killed in a head-on collision on the N3 highway in the Free State on Saturday. Two of the deceased were said to be a young, newlywed couple from Pretoria.
The accident occurred between Warden and Villiers at the height of the festive season.
A small motor vehicle struck a truck in a head-on collision, with the time of the accident unclear.
Paramedics declared three dead at the scene, while the truck driver was being treated for minor injuries before being taken to the nearest hospital.
The accident caused the highway to be closed in both directions for several hours as emergency workers attended to the situation.
Messages of condolences came in for the Pretoria couple identified as Zane and Claryke Hilton.
Laerskool Magalieskruin said on Facebook: “Our deepest condolences and sympathy to the family and friends of Zane & Claryke Hilton on their sudden passing.
“Zane was an ex-Gallie and was also part of our after-school staff for a while.
“Our prayers are with all their loved ones.”
A family member also posted: “Probably the saddest post I have ever had to make…
“Today we lost my cousin Zane Hilton and his wife, Claryke Hilton.
He was like a little brother to me, and we shared so many special memories.
The pain will always be there — there were still so many things we needed to accomplish together.
I will never forget the time we had. …Till we meet again, Cuzzy.”
The cause of the accident at this stage is unclear, but rainy and wet conditions were widespread in Gauteng and the Free State on Monday. Several videos also appeared of the wreckage, under partly cloudy skies, but wet roads.
