The South African Communist Party (SACP) has issued a strong condemnation of the US military invasion of Venezuela, which reportedly resulted in the criminal abduction of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.
This action followed an announcement by US President Donald Trump that US special forces had captured Maduro during a raid in Caracas, code-named "Operation Absolute Resolve." Maduro and his wife, First Lady Cilia Flores, were taken from the capital, Caracas, to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn to face drug trafficking-related charges.
President Donald Trump said that the US is going to run Venezuela until the country can do a safe, proper, and judicious transition.
He also reportedly said that the US oil companies would fix Venezuela's broken infrastructure and start making money for the country.
However, the abduction of Venezuela's democratically elected President Maduro and his wife by the Trump administration has been met with strong international condemnation, with several countries and political bodies weighing in.
South Africa, for instance, issued a statement labelling Trump’s action as a "criminal military invasion of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela," asserting it is in "complete violation of international law."
Similarly, the South African Communist Party (SACP) denounced the act as brazen international piracy.
The SACP further stated that this dastardly act constitutes a criminal and flagrant violation of United Nations Articles 1 and 2, which protect sovereignty, the legal equality of states, and prohibit the use of force. According to the SACP, this action violates international peace and stability in Latin America and the Caribbean, putting the lives of millions of people at serious risk.
The SACP asserts that the Trump administration's goal is imperial regime change in Venezuela to seize its strategic resources, particularly oil and minerals.
Therefore, the SACP offers its full support for Venezuela's right to defend and protect its people, territory, and independence. The SACP also endorses Venezuela's legitimate appeal to the peoples and governments of Latin America, the Caribbean, and the World to actively mobilise in solidarity against the criminal imperialist aggression led by the Trump administration.
China has also intervened, protesting sovereignty violations and calling on the US to release Maduro.
Meanwhile, social media platform X saw a flurry of videos. Some purported to show Venezuelan citizens celebrating and thanking Trump for "freeing Venezuela." However, these videos were countered by others who argued they were fake, claiming Venezuelans were, in fact, protesting and demanding the release of the president they had voted for.
