Horror R102 crash near Isipingo: Death toll rises to 11, taxi driver still entrapped in vehicle

The death toll from a horrific crash involving a taxi and a truck on the R102 near Lotus Park, Isipingo has risen to 11, paramedics have confirmed.

In an update on the accident, ALS Paramedics Garrith Jamieson said 11 deaths had been confirmed including a 13-year-old child.

Jamieson said emergency services were still busy at the scene as the taxi driver remained entrapped in the vehicle. He said a heavy duty tow-truck was currently trying to move the truck to allow emergency services and firefighters to access the taxi driver.

He added that the road remained closed and motorists were urged to stay away from the area.

Regarding the injured, Jamieson said seven critically injured people had been transported to various hospitals.

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport said Transport MEC Siboniso Duma is currently on his way to the scene.

He added that witnesses have alleged that the truck driver made a U-turn which resulted in a head-on collision. 

The cause of the crash will be investigated by the Road Traffic Inspectorate, along with Durban Metro police and the SAPS. 

Duma said he has assigned a team from his office to locate the families of the victims.

"We wish to extend our deepest condolences to the families.
