Calls for accountability and stricter enforcement of road safety laws have intensified following the horrific crash on Wanda Cele Drive (R102) in Isipingo that claimed the lives of 11 passengers on Wednesday morning.
The tragic accident occurred at approximately 8:30am on January 29, 2026 and involved a minibus taxi and a truck. It was reported on Thursday that Transport MEC Siboniso Duma had called for criminal charges against both the taxi and truck driver and the vehicle owners.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has dispatched a team of investigators to determine the circumstances that led to the collision, in collaboration with SAPS.
“The Road Traffic Management Corporation conveys deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the eleven passengers who lost their lives in a tragic road crash,” the RTMC, which described the crash as an “angled collision”.
The RTMC further appealed to motorists to exercise “heightened caution, patience, and adherence to road traffic laws, particularly during peak traffic periods, to prevent further loss of life on our roads.”
The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) KwaZulu-Natal expressed its deep sadness over the tragedy, confirming that the taxi involved was travelling from Emsikweni when it collided with the truck near Lotus Park, Isipingo.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the 11 passengers who lost their lives in this unfortunate incident,” SANTACO KZN said.
The organisation stated it was awaiting a comprehensive report from law enforcement before drawing conclusions about the cause of the crash, cautioning against speculation while investigations continue.
SANTACO KZN Office Manager Sifiso Shangase reiterated the industry’s call for compliance with road safety laws, particularly under adverse weather conditions.
“Drivers are encouraged to always adhere to the rules of the road. With the current rainy weather conditions, it is critical that drivers exercise extra caution,” Shangase said.
SANTACO also condemned overloading and reminded commuters of their rights. “As an organisation, we discourage overloading; we also remind passengers that they have a right not to board an overloaded vehicle.”
The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has thrown its weight behind calls for criminal accountability, citing serious mechanical failures and compliance violations uncovered during preliminary assessments at the scene.
“The ANC fully supports Cde Duma’s call for the relevant drivers and vehicle owners to face the full consequences of their actions, including criminal charges where culpability is evident,” the party said in a statement.
ANC KZN emphasised that negligence on the roads must not go unpunished, warning that recklessness continues to endanger innocent commuters.
“We call on law enforcement agencies to leave no stone unturned to ensure that all those found to have contributed to this accident, in any way, are held accountable,” the statement read.
The party also reiterated its commitment to advocating for stricter enforcement of transport regulations to prevent similar tragedies.
Meanwhile, ALS Paramedics, who were among the first emergency responders on scene, issued a heartfelt message acknowledging the emotional toll of the incident on both families and emergency personnel.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic accident today,” ALS Paramedics said. “We want to sincerely thank our team, along with all other emergency and essential services, who responded with professionalism, compassion, and care under incredibly difficult circumstances.”
ALS extended condolences to the bereaved families and paid tribute to colleagues across services. “To everyone who tragically lost their lives today, rest in peace. We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones affected.”
Authorities have confirmed that injured victims were taken to Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital, Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital, and eThekwini Hospital for treatment.
