The Impendle Local Municipality has complied with the deadline set by Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) MEC Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi and elected a new mayor.
Last week Buthelezi had placed the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands municipality on terms to appoint a mayor this week after a leadership vacuum since July last year.
He had raised concern that the lack of a mayor to guide the municipality had been among the reasons why it was in a precarious financial position and unable to pay staff salaries.
In a statement on Friday, KZN Cogta confirmed that the election had taken place and the newly elected leadership for Impendle Local Municipality is:
Mayor: Cllr Kho Dlamini
Speaker: Cllr Zibuse Dlamini
EXCO Member: Cllr MK Dlamini
The department noted that the appointment of the leadership team came at a critical juncture for the municipality.
MEC Buthelezi emphasised that the primary mandate for Mayor Kho Dlamini and the council is the immediate resolution of the financial crisis currently facing the municipality, which has resulted in the non-payment of staff salaries.
Beyond financial stability, the new leadership is tasked with an urgent mandate to address broader governance challenges and restore administrative integrity.
The department added that it will continue to provide the necessary support and oversight to ensure the municipality is stabilised, paving a clear path toward recovery and sustained service delivery for the community.
