Murder of Shakaskraal farmer: A direct attack on food security, says KZN Premier

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli has strongly condemned the murder of Shakaskraal farmer Aman Giyanshwar Roopsingh, describing the killing as a direct attack on food security, rural livelihoods, and social cohesion in the province.

Roopsingh died after sustaining injuries during a violent home invasion at a sugar farm in Riet Valley, Shakaskraal last week. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local farming community and the broader area.

Ntuli said the killing went beyond a crime against an individual, warning that violence targeting farming families destabilises rural economies and undermines community wellbeing.

“The murder of Mr Roopsingh is a painful and unacceptable loss. It is an assault on the values of safety, coexistence, and respect for human life that underpin our democracy,” the Premier said. “Attacks on those who produce food for the nation strike at the heart of our shared security and prosperity.”

The Premier extended condolences to the Roopsingh family, the Shakaskraal community, and all those affected by the attack. He also expressed concern for the surviving victims, including an elderly uncle who remains hospitalised.

According to a report published by the Sunday Tribune, the attack occurred during a home invasion in which Roopsingh, his mother, and his uncle were confronted by an armed suspect.

The publication reported that the 77-year-old uncle sustained stab wounds and remains in hospital, while firearms were stolen during the incident. No arrests have yet been made and police are investigating a case of house robbery and murder.

The publication also highlighted the Roopsingh family’s long-standing role in agriculture on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast, including their involvement in the sugar industry and community development, noting the broader impact of the killing on both the farming sector and the local community.

Calling for decisive action, the Premier urged the South African Police Service to intensify efforts to apprehend those responsible and ensure they are brought to justice. He has instructed provincial SAPS leadership to prioritise the investigation and deploy all necessary resources.

“Farm-related crimes will not be tolerated. This government remains firm in its commitment to protect rural communities, safeguard food production, and uphold the rule of law,” Ntuli said. “Criminality, in whatever form, will not be allowed to erode social cohesion in KwaZulu-Natal.”

The Premier reaffirmed the provincial government’s commitment to strengthening rural safety strategies, increasing police visibility, and deepening cooperation with farming communities, traditional leaders, and community safety structures.

“As government, we remain resolute in protecting all who live and work in our province. Those who seek to divide communities through violence will face the full might of the law. Justice will prevail,” he said.
