The eThekwini Municipality has activated emergency response systems following a Level 4 severe thunderstorm warning issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS), with authorities cautioning residents to prepare for potentially dangerous weather conditions.

The Municipality said it is “urging residents to remain vigilant as the South African Weather Service has issued a Level 4 severe thunderstorm warning for today, February 12, lasting until tomorrow, Friday, February 13.” Severe storms in KZN have claimed three lives since last Friday.

According to SAWS, severe and widespread showers are expected across most parts of KwaZulu-Natal, including the eThekwini region. The municipality warned that “conditions likely to include heavy downpours, excessive lightning, strong damaging winds, and hail.”

Officials stressed the seriousness of the threat, noting that “this weather warning impacts the eThekwini region and its patterns pose a serious risk to life, property, and infrastructure.”

Authorities cautioned that intense rainfall could trigger flooding in vulnerable areas. The City highlighted that “the anticipated rainfall may lead to flooding on roads, bridges, and low-lying settlements, while poor visibility and slippery surfaces will make driving hazardous.”

Particular concern has been raised for structurally vulnerable housing. “Informal and mud-based structures are particularly vulnerable to damage. Residents living in flood-prone areas are urged to take precautionary measures to protect themselves and their families.”

With deteriorating road conditions expected, motorists are being urged to exercise heightened caution on the city's road.

The public has also been advised to limit movement during the storm period. “The public is strongly advised to stay indoors, where possible, and avoid unnecessary travel,” the municipality stated.

Officials issued a firm warning regarding flooded crossings: “Under no circumstances should anyone attempt to cross swollen rivers or streams, especially where water levels exceed ankle height.”

Emergency Services Mobilised

The municipality said that emergency teams are fully prepared. “The municipality’s Disaster Management Directorate and emergency services are on high alert and fully mobilised to respond swiftly to any incidents.”

Authorities noted that conditions remain dynamic and updates will be issued by the South African Weather Service.”

The City added that it “will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide timely communication to safeguard residents.”

Residents requiring urgent assistance are advised to contact the City’s Disaster Management Centre on 031 361 0000.

The Level 4 warning remains in effect until 23:59 on Friday, 13 February 2026.
