KwaZulu-Natal residents have been urged to take precautions as severe thunderstorms have been forecast for across the province on Tuesday.

This comes days after KwaBester in Inanda, north of Durban experienced extensive flooding in heavy rains at the weekend.

The KZN Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs department said the SA Weather Service had indicated that a Yellow Level 4 and Yellow Level 2 warning are in place.

The department said heavy downpours are expected, which may lead to:

• Dangerous localised flooding

• Roads and bridges being submerged

• Flooding in low-lying homes and settlements

• Traffic disruptions and possible infrastructure damage.

KZN Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma said the flood victims are staying with friends while plans are made for their future accommodation.

The department said communities in flood-prone and low-lying areas must be on high alert and must not attempt to cross flooded roads.

Meanwhile KZN Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma has assigned teams to Inanda after the heavy rains at the weekend caused extensive flooding in KwaBester.

"The Department of Transport team is using high-capacity mud pumps and has organised an industrial jetting machine to clear the floodwaters. Debris has blocked water flow resulting in houses submerging in water in Kwa Bester, Inanda."

"Human Settlements team, working with the eThekwini Municipality has profiled families to ensure proper intervention. We don't want anyone to be left behind. Some families are currently living with friends and we are working out a plan to accommodate them while plans to deploy resources are being finalised."
