Teachers at Zamokuhle Primary School in KwaMashu are recovering from a traumatic ordeal after armed suspects stormed the school and robbed them at gunpoint.

The brazen attack unfolded on Friday, 13 March 2026, when a group of gunmen entered the premises, overpowered security personnel, and confronted educators during school hours. Teachers were robbed of personal belongings and, in some cases, forced to transfer money while under threat.

The incident has left both staff and pupils shaken, according to a statement from the provincial education department.

KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC Sipho Hlomuka has condemned the attack, describing it as a “barbaric and cowardly act”.

“Our educators must be protected at all times and should never have to work under the threat of violence,” Hlomuka said.

Authorities have appealed to the public to come forward with any information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects.

The Department of Education has confirmed that psychosocial support is being provided to affected teachers and learners, while steps are being taken to strengthen security at the school and nearby institutions.

Hlomuka warned that increasing violence in and around schools poses a threat to the education system and called on communities to work with authorities to protect learning spaces.

“This is a direct assault on the future of our country. Schools must remain safe havens for teaching and learning,” he said.
