The National Prosecuting Authority and the national police have confirmed that police commissioner Fannie Masemola has been served with summons to appear in court in connection with the Medicare 24 Tshwane district tender case.

Masemola is set to appear in court on April 21. Twelve senior police officials appeared on charges of fraud and corruption in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Wednesday along with alleged tenderpreneur and attempted murder accused Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala.

SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed to IOL that the summons served on Masemola relates to the Medicare 24 procurement tender.

She said Masemola was served on Wednesday and will comply with the legal process.

Mathe said the national commissioner remains committed to the rule of law and will cooperate fully.

“General Masemola welcomes any investigation or due process that seeks to address allegations of wrongdoing,” she said.

The NPA's spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago also confirmed the summons and that Masemola is set to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on April 21.

He declined to provide details on the charges. “That’s all we can say, because we can’t talk about the contents of the summons,” Kganyago said.

In court on Wednesday, the court heard that the matter relates to the award of a R228 million contract to Medicare 24 Tshwane district issued by the SA Police Service in 2024.
