The Motor Industry Staff Association (MISA) has called on government to introduce urgent and comprehensive relief measures following a sharp increase in the wholesale price of illuminating paraffin, warning of severe consequences for low-income households ahead of winter.
MISA welcomed government’s temporary R3 reduction in the fuel levy for April, but cautioned that the relief is insufficient and short-term, particularly amid uncertainty over ongoing global tensions that may continue to drive up fuel costs beyond May.
The union said the price of paraffin has risen by R11.67 per litre, placing additional strain on millions of South Africans who rely on the fuel for basic daily needs.
“Winter is around the corner. Paraffin is the primary source of energy for millions of South Africans who use it for cooking, heating, and lighting. It is a basic necessity for the poorest of the poor,” said Martlé Keyter.
“The doubling of its price threatens to deepen energy poverty, exacerbate food insecurity, and strip vulnerable households of their dignity. Families already struggling to survive will be forced into harsher conditions, with limited alternatives available to them,” Keyter said.
The union is now urging authorities to implement a broader relief package aimed at cushioning the most vulnerable. Among the proposals are:
MISA also called for an extension of fuel levy reductions beyond May, arguing that sustained intervention is necessary to prevent further economic hardship.
“The price hikes created a global humanitarian crisis. Our Government must act decisively to shield the poorest households from the devastating impact of unaffordable energy,” Keyter said.
The call comes as concerns grow over rising living costs and the disproportionate impact on low-income households, many of whom remain dependent on paraffin as an affordable and accessible energy source.
