The eThekwini Municipality has urged residents to remain on high alert after a Level 2 weather warning for severe thunderstorms was issued for the city and surrounding areas.

The warning, issued by the South African Weather Service, came into effect on Sunday and is expected to remain in place until the evening of Monday.

According to the municipality, widespread showers and severe thunderstorms are forecast across KwaZulu-Natal, with eThekwini expected to be among the hardest-hit regions.

Authorities warned that the adverse weather conditions could include heavy downpours, strong and damaging winds, excessive lightning and hail, posing risks to life, property and infrastructure.

“Flooding is expected on roads, bridges - and low-lying areas, while poor visibility and slippery road surfaces will make driving hazardous,” the municipality said in a statement.

Residents living in flood-prone areas, particularly informal settlements, have been advised to take precautionary measures to protect themselves and their property.

Motorists have been urged to reduce speed, keep a safe following distance and exercise extreme caution when travelling on wet roads.

The municipality further encouraged residents to remain indoors where possible and to avoid unnecessary travel during the warning period.

Emergency services, including the city’s Disaster Management Directorate, have been placed on high alert and are prepared to respond to any weather-related incidents.

Residents have also been cautioned against attempting to cross swollen rivers or streams, especially where water levels exceed ankle height.

The municipality said it would continue to provide updates through its official communication platforms as the situation develops.
