Prepare to rub your eyes in disbelief. The world-renowned Museum of Illusions is officially making its way to the East Coast, set to transform the Gateway Theatre of Shopping into a playground of perception starting Saturday, 25 April 2026.

Following massive success in Johannesburg and Cape Town, the Durban launch marks a significant expansion for the global brand, which first sparked a visual revolution in Zagreb, Croatia, back in 2015. With outposts in heavy-hitting cities like New York, Paris, and Dubai, the museum has captivated millions by proving that seeing isn't always believing.

Forget the "hushed tones" and "no-touch" policies of traditional galleries. This is a museum designed to be touched, entered, and thoroughly puzzled over. The Durban location will feature the brand’s signature "edutainment" approach, blending science and art to create an interactive journey.

Visitors can look forward to:

  • The Tilted Room:Where you’ll seemingly defy gravity and struggle to stand upright.
  • The Clone Room: A chance to sit at a table and play cards with five versions of yourself.
  • The Infinity Room: A hypnotic space where the walls disappear into a never-ending horizon.

“Durban is a city known for its energy, creativity, and vibrant culture, which makes it the perfect place for the next Museum of Illusions,” says Mark Collie, owner of Museum of Illusions South Africa. “After the incredible response in Johannesburg and Cape Town, we’re excited to invite KZN visitors to step into a world where nothing is quite as it seems.”

While the exhibits are undeniably "scroll-stopping" fodder for social media, the museum is also a versatile venue. The space is equipped to handle everything from quirky date nights and family outings to school trips and corporate team-building events.

The museum will operate seven days a week, with extended hours on Fridays and Saturdays (9 am – 10 pm) to accommodate the weekend crowd. While tickets are available at the door, booking online is highly recommended to secure a spot in advance.
