Close to 5,000 invoices have been processed through eThekwini Municipality's new online invoice system after concerns were raised by service providers about payment delays.
The municipality said in a statement on Tuesday that it has processed 5,000 invoices through its newly introduced online invoice payment system, with a further 2,982 invoices approved for payment.
Service providers recently protested outside the City's offices in the Durban CBD arguing they have not been paid for months.
The municipality had said at the time that system was had been behind the delays.
The introduction of the online invoice system forms part of the Municipality’s broader efforts to enhance efficiency, transparency, and compliance with applicable laws and regulations governing financial management.
“Service providers are encouraged to continue working collaboratively with the Municipality during this transition period to ensure full compliance,” said the municipality in a statement.
The new system introduces several key benefits aimed at improving the overall experience for service providers and strengthening financial governance:
The city reminded service providers of the importance of submitting invoices timeously.
“This will assist the Municipality in meeting its commitment to process payments within 14 days for SMMEs and within 30 days for all other service providers, in line with regulatory requirements.
In line with previous communications, service providers are encouraged to utilise the system by uploading their invoices directly onto the platform.
For those experiencing difficulties or lacking access to computers, assistance is available at the relevant line directorates,” it said.
The municipality said that from 4 May 2026, service providers may also visit Sizakala Centres for support with uploading invoices to their profiles on the portal.
The Municipality will continue to provide training, and service providers are encouraged to attend.
In addition to the available video resource, training may also be requested by emailing: Accountspay.ewfqueries@durban.gov.za
