Police have launched a massive manhunt for a syndicate behind a multi-million rand drug shipment after cocaine worth approximately R13 million was intercepted at the Durban Harbour.

The recovery was the result of an intelligence-driven operation on Tuesday, 5 May, involving the Durban Operational Response Services (ORS) and the Serious Organised Crime Investigation (SOCI) unit.

According to KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the operation was triggered by a previous drug bust in Gauteng last month.

"Following the recovery of drugs in Gauteng province in April this year, information indicated that the drugs entered the country through the Durban Harbour. Intelligence was activated and certain vessels were profiled," Netshiunda said.

During the search of the profiled cargo, officers discovered 32 blocks of cocaine hidden inside the air conditioning compartments of buses. The vehicles had been shipped from an undisclosed South American country and were destined for Gauteng.

"Investigations are underway to uncover the suspects behind the shipment and the intended recipients," Netshiunda added.
