Four schoolchildren were killed and five others critically injured after a crash involving two vehicles outside Daveyton, in Ekurhuleni.
City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services spokesperson William Ntladi said the horrific crash occurred on the N12 westbound just before the Putfontein Road off-ramp, around 7.45 am.
“The incident was reported around 7.45 am, and swiftly, the teams responded for intervention,” Ntladi said.
He confirmed that the victims were schoolchildren of different ages and schools coming from Daveyton.
“The crash involved a double cab bakkie and a Toyota Yaris,” Ntladi said.
He said one adult woman, who was trapped from the wreckage, has been rescued.
"The adult woman has been rescued from the wreck using hydraulic rescue equipment, known as the Jaws of Life."
Ntladi reported that the woman is in a stable condition and will be airlifted to the nearest medical facility.
The City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services, private medical services, and law enforcement units are on the scene.
“Currently, the entire freeway is closed for traffic as rescue teams are busy with rescue and recovery of entrapped patients in vehicles,” Ntladi added.
He advised motorists to use alternative routes, including Kingsway or Etwatwa offramp direction N12 Benoni, as traffic is congested.
“Onlookers are also causing traffic congestion. We urge motorists to please exercise caution as this could lead to another road accident,” Ntladi said.
