The Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, Deputy Minister Peace Mabe, former Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) MP Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, and broadcaster Mzansi Magic have all expressed condolences following the death of broadcaster and DJ Warrick Robert Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras.

DJ Warras died after being shot on December 16 in the Johannesburg CBD, Gauteng. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death are continuing.

Confirming the department's position, spokesperson Stacey-Lee Khojane said the country was mourning the loss of a prominent and influential creative voice.

"Minister Gayton McKenzie and Deputy Minister, Peace Mabe, extend profound condolences to the family, friends, loved ones and many South Africans mourning the tragic loss of DJ Warras," Khojane said.

The Department said DJ Warras was widely respected across the media and creative industries and was regarded as a mentor who consistently supported and encouraged emerging talent.

Former Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) MP Mbuyiseni Ndlozi described the killing as another stark illustration of South Africa's entrenched culture of violence. He also extended condolences to the DJ's family and called for decisive action to curb violent crime.

"We need to silence the guns, win the streets back in our troubled country," Ndlozi said.

Broadcaster Mzansi Magic also paid tribute, describing DJ Warras as a valued member of its family whose presence had a lasting impact on local entertainment and audiences. The channel said his work on its platforms reflected warmth, sincerity and a deep connection with human stories.

Director of Local Entertainment Channels at M-Net, Shirley Adonisi, said his contribution went far beyond a single programme.

"DJ Warras was more than just a face of a reality series; he was a talented storyteller, a passionate music lover and a warm soul who brought joy and energy to every moment on screen," Adonisi said.
