Authorities have intercepted an arms dealer at the Marrianhill Toll Plaza, with law enforcement officials seizing a vehicle carrying weapons and 800 rounds of ammunition.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlement, Siboniso Duma said the operation, part of the province’s #NenzaniLaEzweni campaign, involved a coordinated effort between the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), Durban Metro Police, and the South African Police Service (SAPS).
''The two individuals involved, including a policeman, failed to produce valid documents demonstrating compliance with the Firearms Control Act.''
“The proliferation of firearms and ammunition is a major contributor towards violent crimes and robberies,” Duma said.
Duma added that authorities do not want the province’s road networks to be used as part of the illegal supply and movement of firearms and ammunition.
During the operation, the vehicle used by the suspects was impounded after it was discovered to be illegally fitted with security lights, a contravention of the National Road Traffic Act.
“By and large, the RTI is clamping down on the use of blue lights in any part of the province,” he said.
In addition to the arms seizure, three other suspects were arrested for impersonating police officers. They were found in possession of fake police appointment cards, Duma said.
Duma confirmed that relevant law enforcement agencies are conducting further investigations into the matter.
