Limpopo police have arrested a 23-year-old man following a business robbery and a shootout with officers at Rapotokwane village under the Rust de Winter policing precinct on Monday morning.

According to police, three suspects targeted a general dealer in the area, with two of them entering the shop while posing as customers. While at the counter, one of the suspects allegedly produced a firearm and threatened an employee, demanding cash.

An undisclosed amount of money was taken, while the second suspect allegedly moved behind the counter and stole several items, including cartons of cigarettes and a Flash point of sale machine.

Police said the suspects fled the scene and joined a third accomplice who was waiting in a black Toyota Yaris.

“While attempting to flee, the suspects encountered police officers who were conducting routine patrols in the area. A shootout ensued between the police and the suspects,” Limpopo SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said.

During the exchange, one suspect was shot by police and was immediately transported to the hospital under police guard, where he was placed under arrest.

The suspects abandoned the vehicle on the side of the road, which was later confiscated by police. Officers also recovered one pistol with an empty magazine at the scene.

Police have opened cases of business robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm. The arrested suspect is expected to appear before the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court once medically fit.

“A manhunt for the remaining suspects is ongoing,” Mashaba said.

Police have urged anyone with information that could assist the investigation to contact the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Dimakatso Mashamaite, on 082 414 2378, the nearest police station, or SAPS Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
