The bail release of 10 Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) cops hangs in the balance after the Western Cape High Court reserved judgment on their bail appeal.
In the Cape Town Magistrate's Court, the group of 11 cops face murder charges after Wade Price - allegedly affiliated with the Clever Kids gang - died while in police custody in December last year.
The 10 cops were refused bail at the Athlone Magistrate’s Court.
The officers are facing charges of kidnapping, torture, assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, attempting to defeat the administration of justice, and the murder of Price on December 4, 2025, following an interrogation linked to a shooting incident outside the same court the previous day.
On Thursday at Athlone Magistrate’s Court, where all cops appeared for the criminal charges, the matter was postponed to March 5, 2026, for further investigation.
IOL reported that the court previously heard that Price and three friends were taken to Manenberg SAPS, with CCTV footage showing them entering the station alongside the accused officers.
While the three men were later released, Price was allegedly taken to a property on Vygekraal Road, where he was allegedly murdered.
Previously, Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) spokesperson Lizzy Suping confirmed that accused nine was released on bail of R100 due to health challenges.
After their failed application in the magistrate’s court, Suping had said: “The 10 were denied bail because they failed to demonstrate any exceptional circumstances for the court to consider granting them bail.
“Although the officers allege that Price complained of ear pain and collapsed during interrogation, Ipid's investigation established that his cause of death was as a result of unnatural causes,” said Suping.
