Police have arrested a 40-year-old man after seizing dagga worth an estimated R250 000 in an intelligence-driven operation on Saturday morning.

A multi-disciplinary team comprising members of the Lebowakgomo Task Team and the Crime Prevention Unit (CPU) of Lebowakgomo SAPS carried out the operation, acting on the information.

According to police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the arrest followed a tip-off that a maroon Nissan NP200 was transporting dagga along the R37 main road.

“The information was immediately operationalised, and while conducting patrols along the R518, members spotted a vehicle matching the description,” said Ledwaba.

The vehicle was stopped and searched, he said. Upon inspection, members discovered that the bakkie was fully loaded with dagga.

The driver could not provide a satisfactory explanation for possessing the large quantity, and he was immediately arrested and charged with possession of and dealing in dagga.

“The estimated street value of the seized dagga is approximately R250 000, while the vehicle used in the commission of the crime is valued at approximately R120 000.

''The vehicle was also confiscated,” Ledwaba added.

Ledwaba said the suspect is expected to appear in the Lebowakgomo Magistrate’s Court on Monday,  February,23, 2026.

“Police investigations are ongoing,” he said.
