Police in KwaZulu-Natal have shot dead two men believed to be behind a cash heist that took place in Verulam earlier this week.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, said police had been following up on intelligence and located a house in Edendale, a township in Msunduzi local municipality, where they encountered the suspects.

"A shootout ensued between police and the suspects. Two suspects were shot and fatally wounded during the shootout and one suspect narrowly evaded arrest," he said.

Netshiunda said police found three firearms, two rifles, a handgun and several rounds of ammunition in the house.

"A VW Polo which was allegedly used in the commission of the cash-in-transit robbery was also found at the scene. A bakkie with numerous number plates was found in the garage," he said.
