Police in KwaZulu-Natal have confirmed that an investigation is underway following the deaths of two suspects at a Durban petrol station in Spine Road in Westville on Thursday morning.

IOL reported that three suspects were involved in a high-speed chase and shoot-out with a private security company that ended at the petrol station across from the Pavilion shopping centre.

Garrith Jamieson, ALS Paramedics spokesperson, said one of the suspects was fatally wounded in a gun battle during the shoot-out, while the second suspect fell to his death while trying to evade arrest.

According to provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, private security company guards were patrolling the M19 when the suspects, in a white BMW, drove past them.

"The security guards reportedly followed the vehicle, and the occupants of the BMW vehicle opened fire towards the security guards, and a high-speed shoot-out between the occupants of the BMW and security guards ended at the fuel station," he said.

Netshiunda said preliminary reports revealed that the suspects' vehicle was fitted with cloned number plates.

"The driver of the BMW vehicle surrendered and was arrested. Two firearms were found inside the BMW vehicle," Netshiunda said.

He said a case of attempted murder and attempted murder is under investigation.

A third suspect was not injured. He is believed to have been taken into police custody.
