Authorities have launched a manhunt for a truck driver who fled after a major drug bust at the Oshoek Port of Entry between South Africa and Eswatini, where illicit goods worth an estimated R2.8 million were seized.

The interception took place on the evening of March 16, 2026, during a joint operation involving the Border Management Authority (BMA), the South African Revenue Service (SARS), and the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Officials stopped a truck travelling from Eswatini into South Africa at around 8pm and, upon searching the vehicle, uncovered a large consignment of dagga and other illicit goods hidden in the trailer.

“Upon conducting a thorough search of the vehicle, officials discovered 50 bags of dagga concealed in the trailer, with a total weight of approximately 671.5 kilograms and an estimated street value of R2.8 million. In addition, 916 illicit tyres were found in the same consignment.”

The truck driver fled during the interception and remains at large.

“The driver of the truck fled the scene during the interception and is currently at large. Law enforcement authorities have launched a manhunt to apprehend the suspect,” authorities confirmed.

All confiscated items have been registered as evidence with SAPS, while SARS has seized the truck as part of an ongoing investigation. A criminal case has been opened.

BMA Commissioner Dr Michael Masiapato praised the joint effort, highlighting the importance of coordinated enforcement at the country’s borders.

He “commended the BMA, the South African Revenue Service (SARS) and the South African Police Service (SAPS) officials for a successful joint operation that led to the interception of a significant consignment of illicit drugs and goods.”

He further stressed that authorities remain committed to tightening border security.

“The Port Management Committee’s commitment to strengthening border security and preventing the cross-border movement of illicit goods” remains firm, he said, adding that inter-agency collaboration is critical in “disrupting criminal networks and safeguarding the country’s borders.”

Investigations are ongoing as law enforcement agencies continue efforts to track down the fleeing suspect.
