A much-anticipated wedding in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal came to a shocking halt this morning after the arrest of the groom and his father.

The drama unfolded following a major operation by the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), which arrested a total of 45 motorists for drunk driving late last night and into the early hours of today.

Authorities say the individuals failed to answer the question #NenzaniLaEzweni? (What are you doing in the nation?), sparking swift action.

KZN Department of Transport spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya confirmed the arrests.

Others who were caught up in the crackdown were figures from across the community, including a lecturer who claimed he could 'go a week speaking only English without using Zulu', a safety manager, two teachers, two nurses, a pharmacist, a chief liaison officer from a local municipality, and a student.

"The wedding which was scheduled to take place at 11am today has been called off," Sibiya said.

Transport MEC Siboniso Duma weighed in on the matter, delivering a stern warning: "Arrest all of them and have no mercy."
