A neighbour of the seven family members who were kidnapped and brutally murdered in KZN said there were no signs of struggle during the night of the attack.
Seven family members were kidnapped from a home in Newtown, Newark, on Tuesday night, April 21, 2026, before their bodies were discovered in Melmoth the following day.
The victims, aged between 20 and 83, were found dumped in a field in Melmoth on Wednesday, bringing a grim end to what police have described as a coordinated and brutal attack.
Police allege that during the ordeal, the 20-year-old female victim was sexually assaulted.
The suspects demanded banking details and PIN numbers from the victims, with several unlawful transactions later detected from their accounts before the killings.
Investigators have also alleged that one of the suspects was previously employed by the victims and used that position to gain access to the household.
Three people have been arrested.
Speaking to eNCA, the neighbour said the discovery came as a devastating shock when the family’s absence was noticed the following morning.
“Nobody, no neighbors can even say that they heard anything. And even though we have dogs around, they didn't even bark at that time,” the neighbour said.
The resident added that the full scale of the incident only became clear hours later.
“That Wednesday morning when we woke up, that was like a bomb exploded for us to know that this is what happened to them; they all were taken away,” the neighbour said.
The neighbour further explained that the community had no idea what had unfolded overnight, only later learning that the victims had been abducted.
The three suspects are expected to appear in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on Friday, April 24, 2026, on multiple charges, including kidnapping, murder, and robbery.
