Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero has called for justice and urged the law to take its course following the fatal shooting of Warrick “DJ Warras” Stock, a media personality and businessman, who was killed in the Johannesburg CBD on Tuesday.

The killing, described by authorities as targeted and brazen, has shocked the city and reignited concerns over violent crime in the inner city, where Stock had become a vocal advocate for safety, accountability and urban renewal.

Stock was not only known for his work in radio, television and digital media, but also for his business interests in nightlife promotion, security consulting and inner-city property management, roles that placed him at the centre of several disputes.

Speculation is that tensions linked to his security-related work and efforts to reclaim buildings from criminal control may have contributed to the motive, although police have not confirmed this, and no arrests have yet been made.

In a statement, Morero said the murder was senseless and devastating, adding that Johannesburg could not allow violence to silence citizens working to improve the city.

He called on law enforcement to act decisively and transparently.

“The City of Johannesburg calls for justice and urges the law to take its course.”

News of Stock’s death triggered an outpouring of grief online, with social media users describing him as fearless, outspoken and deeply committed to Johannesburg.

Many demanded justice, while others questioned ongoing failures to protect people in the CBD.

Morero extended condolences to Stock’s children, family, friends and colleagues, and asked for privacy as police investigate.

As the city mourns, the mayor said justice for Stock must remain non-negotiable.

“We join the family in kindly requesting privacy, allowing law enforcement agencies the space needed to conduct a thorough investigation,” he said.
