Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has urged Gauteng’s newly appointed finance MEC, Nkululeko Dunga, to restore financial stability and deliver a clean audit in the provincial government.

Dunga’s appointment on Wednesday, confirmed by Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi during a decisive cabinet reshuffle, has been seen as a political turning point.

He replaces Lebogang Maile, who has been moved to the education and sports portfolio. This signalled the EFF’s formal entry into the Government of Provincial Unity (GPU).

The EFF will now control the province’s finances and budget.

Taking to X, Malema struck a tone of confidence laced with expectation. “Politics is about patience and perseverance; your mandate is a clean audit and financial stability for the Gauteng Province. Congratulations Commissar Dunga, in you we trust. Ndaa,” he said.

Dunga responded with deference and resolve, pledging disciplined leadership. “We internalise this directive and shall, with discipline and precision, heed the call of the revolution as mandated, President,” he wrote.

Gauteng’s finances face mounting strain, with persistent service delivery backlogs and growing fiscal pressure testing the province’s resilience.

In a statement, the EFF framed the appointment as a “progressive step” toward stronger governance, underscoring its long-held position that it would enter government where its principles are upheld.

The party said Dunga’s leadership would be critical in safeguarding its political programme while ensuring administrative stability.
