Ekurhuleni City Manager Kagiso Lerutla has been arrested, sources confirmed to IOL. He was taken into custody on Sunday at OR Tambo International Airport.
Lerutla is expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday alongside suspended EMPD acting chief Commissioner Julius Mkhwanazi.
Both face charges of fraud, corruption, and defeating or obstructing the course of justice. Mkhwanazi was arrested on Saturday.
Police confirmed the arrest of a 40-year-old senior official on Sunday morning.
“He faces charges of fraud, corruption and defeating the ends of justice,” said SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe.
Lerutla was appointed City Manager on November 1, 2025, after serving as the Metro’s Group CFO.
The arrests place Ekurhuleni’s top leadership under intense scrutiny as investigators pursue alleged corruption at a senior level.
