eThekwini Municipality has launched an internal investigation after a video circulated widely on social media showing a City official sweeping litter directly into a stormwater drainage system.
The Municipality confirmed it is aware of the footage and has moved swiftly to address the incident.
“We take this matter seriously and have initiated an internal investigation into the conduct of the official concerned,” the City said.
The Municipality stressed that due process will be followed.
“Internal processes will be followed to ensure procedural fairness for all parties involved,” the City noted.
The City strongly condemned the behaviour shown in the video, warning that such actions have serious environmental consequences.
“Improper disposal of waste into stormwater drains negatively impact the environment by polluting waterways and harming ecosystems,” the Municipality said.
Reaffirming its commitment to environmental protection, the City said it remains dedicated to responsible waste management.
“The City remains committed to upholding proper waste management practices and protecting our natural resources.”
The Municipality added that disciplinary or corrective action will depend on the findings of the investigation.
“Appropriate corrective measures will be implemented based on the outcome of the investigation,” it said.
Members of the public have also been urged to assist by reporting misconduct. The City encouraged residents to report any wrongdoing by municipal employees anonymously to the City Integrity and Investigation Directorate via its toll-free hotline.
