Tributes have been streaming in for Westville Boys' High School pupil Daniel Hill, who died after a short illness.

In a heartfelt tribute, Hill's former primary school, Deutsche Schule in Durban, described the teenager as a kind and playful spirit.

The school said he died on January 17 after contracting the flu.

"A superb athlete, Daniel excelled in sport and was especially gifted as a swimmer."

The school said he would be remembered for his warmth, his energy, and the positive impact he had on everyone around him."

His father, Clinton Hill, wrote a heartfelt tribute on social media following his son's untimely passing.

"Fly with the angels, my boy."

Hill said the family was left stunned after the tragic news.

"You left us so suddenly, and we are numb and lost for words.

"I walked into the kitchen this morning and wanted to call you to pack away the clean dishes like you always did," said the mourning parent.

"Lulu keeps looking for you. I will never get over this and will keep you alive in our home forever."

Westville Boys' High School shared a touching tribute to the teenager.

"We received the devastating news of the loss of one of our Griffins. Daniels' passing has touched our school community deeply, and our hearts are heavy with sorrow.

"We extend our sincerest condolences to his family, friends, classmates, and everyone whose life he touched.

"May his memory be a blessing, and may those who are grieving find comfort, strength, and support during this incredibly difficult time," the school shared.

Its sports teams observed a moment of silence in honour of Daniel, alongside opposition schools.

This gesture was very touching to the grieving father.

"We are truly blown away by all the support. Thank you to each and every one of you," Hill said.

Deutsche Schule Durban where Daniel attended primary school also shared their sympathies.

"Daniel was deeply loved by his peers, teachers, and families throughout our school community," said the school.

Teachers and pupils remember him not only for his academic journey, but for the gentle, playful way he connected with those around him, particularly the youngest learners.

During breaks, Daniel could often be found running across the playground, laughing as he played tag with smaller children who were instinctively drawn to his kindness.

His father said the family is still finding it extremely difficult to come to terms with what happened.

"Taken away so quickly and so young. To think I will never see my boy again absolutely breaks me.

"He has touched so many hearts in his 14 years of living. We are going to miss him so much and cannot even think about life without him," he said.

Daniel's funeral will be held at the Marianhill Monasterry Church on Friday, January 30.
