The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is calling on grant recipients to utilise the eLife Certification self-service platform to confirm their eligibility.
This digital system allows beneficiaries to fulfill the legal requirement of proving they are still alive using biometric verification, helping to prevent the immediate suspension of social grants and reducing the need for physical visits to local offices.
Under the Social Assistance Act, life certification is a mandatory process used to protect public funds from fraud. By verifying that beneficiaries are still alive, Sassa ensures that resources are directed only to those lawfully entitled to receive them.
The e-Life Certification is a self-service digital platform that allows beneficiaries to complete their life certification from the comfort of their homes. This platform is accessible via the Sassa online services portal, offering a user-friendly interface and secure biometric verification through the electronic Know Your Client (eKYC) system.
According to Sassa, the introduction of an enhanced self-service Life Certification system is a critical initiative aimed at ensuring the integrity of the social grants system while improving convenience for beneficiaries.
This process is fundamental to maintaining the integrity of the social grants system, as it prevents payments to non-existent clients and ensures that public funds are distributed solely to individuals lawfully entitled to receive them. By enforcing life certification, Sassa said it fulfils its statutory obligation to administer social assistance in a fair, transparent, and accountable manner.
Sassa is encouraging beneficiaries to complete this certification annually. If Sassa contacts you for immediate certification, you must comply within the stipulated timeframe regardless of your grant type or age. Failure to complete the eLife Certification may result in Sassa interpreting the account as deceased or not legitimate, leading to an immediate suspension of grants.
For further assistance or technical support, you can contact your nearest Sassa office or visit the official Sassa services portal.
