eThekwini Municipality has urged residents to take urgent precautions after the South African Weather Service issued a Level 6 severe weather warning for Tuesday through to Wednesday evening.

Forecast models indicate widespread and intense thunderstorms across KwaZulu-Natal, with the eThekwini metro expected to face severe weather.

In a statement released on Tuesday, eThekwini Municipality warned of damage and floods.

"Rainfall accumulation is expected to exceed 80mm, significantly increasing the likelihood of flash flooding, particularly in low‑lying and flood‑prone areas.

These conditions are expected to result in severe damage to infrastructure, including roads, bridges and essential services, while also affecting both formal and informal settlements."

Heavy downpours, strong winds, excessive lightning and hail are expected.

Officials also highlighted the added danger of lightning strikes, which may trigger fires.

Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and take steps to protect both life and property.

Communities in high-risk areas are advised to relocate to safer, higher ground where possible and to avoid crossing flooded roads, rivers or bridges under any circumstances.

Motorists have been warned to exercise extreme caution due to poor visibility, flooding and slippery road conditions, with unnecessary travel strongly discouraged.

The municipality confirmed that its Disaster Management Directorate, Emergency Services and other relevant departments have been placed on high alert and are ready to respond to incidents.

Residents are advised to stay indoors during severe storms, secure loose items around their homes, unplug electrical appliances during lightning activity, and closely monitor children, the elderly and other vulnerable individuals.

Officials stressed that the Level 6 warning should be treated with the highest level of seriousness, noting that the expected weather poses an immediate threat to lives, property and infrastructure.

The municipality added that the alert remains subject to change as conditions evolve and encouraged residents to monitor official communication channels for updates.

In case of emergencies, residents can contact the City’s Disaster Management Centre on 031 361 0000.
