Pretoria - Maya Wegerif, known in music circles as Sho Madjozi, has launched a children’s book titled Shoma and the Stars.
The book is a celebration of people’s uniqueness and courage, and was written as a tribute to her younger sister, Makhanani Nyeleti Maganye, who died in a car accident in 2019.
The book tells the tale of little Shoma learning to accept loss, navigating life as an outsider, and eventually learning that her uniqueness is her power. By being herself, Shoma finds a new group of sisters.
The multiple award-winning singer, songwriter and performing artist said her fans were her greatest inspiration and gave her a lot of hope and light.
“I am passionate about giving young kids the high-quality local entertainment they love.
“I try to look for positivity in everything, and I’m interested in bringing the things that I think are missing in society.
“If you wish something existed, make it. That’s how I see it,” she said.
Wengerif’s love for writing started at a young age; she even enrolled for a diploma in creative writing.
“My parents used to buy me a lot of books growing up, so that’s where my love for writing stemmed from.
“I have been writing poems and stories since I was 7, and it makes me so happy that I managed to write and finish my book.”
Although she encountered many challenges and hurdles along the way, such as losing her management, friends and loved ones, she was able to dedicate herself to finishing the book.
Wengerif is proud of her achievements, including her writing skills. Practising gratitude and trying not to compare herself to others was the main thing that encouraged her not to give up.
“I barely have time to think because I am everywhere all at once, so working keeps me sane, even though I started writing this book during lockdown.
“I’m glad to have finished it now.”
The book is available at a variety of outlets, including Exclusive Books, Bargain Books and online at Ethnikids. It is also available for pre-orders at Bargain Books.
Several pages of the book include 3D animation elements that can be accessed via a smart mobile device.
The typography and imagery of the book is beautiful and vibrant, aligned with the Sho Madjozi brand and illustrated by artist Katlego Keokgale.
