Premier Panyaza Lesufi has denounced the recent surge of violent incidents in the province, including a horrific mass shooting at the Saulsville Hostel in Pretoria and the murder of Madlanga Commission witness Marius van der Merwe.

In the early hours of Saturday morning, a mass shooting at Saulsville Hostel claimed the lives of 12 people, including three minors, and left 14 others injured. Lesufi expressed his deepest condolences to the families affected by the violence.

“We are distressed by the loss of innocent lives, including young children, in this senseless act of violence. Our hearts go out to the families who are grieving today. As the Gauteng Provincial Government, we will not allow our communities to live in fear,” Lesufi said.

Lesufi highlighted the role of illegal shebeens and liquor outlets in fuelling criminal activity.

“Illegal shebeens must not be allowed to operate as safe havens for criminals. We strongly condemn the lawlessness that thrives in such spaces. Working with law enforcement, we will intensify operations targeting both legal and illegal alcohol establishments to ensure full compliance with the law.”

It is also revealed that law enforcement authorities, supported by specialised units, are currently pursuing leads and working around the clock to track down the suspects responsible for the Saulsville attack.

In a separate statement, Premier Lesufi urged authorities to fast-track the investigation into the killing of Marius Van der Merwe, a witness at the Madlanga Commission, in Brakpan.

“Violence has no place in our province. Any attempt to obstruct or interfere with justice will be met with zero tolerance,” Lesufi said, emphasizing the government’s commitment to protecting witnesses and upholding the rule of law.
