Johannesburg bans street parties for the festive season following a tragic shooting

The MMC for Public Safety, Dr Mgcini Tshwaku, has announced that no street bashes will be allowed in Johannesburg for the entire festive season.

Tshwaku says events held without proper approval will be shut down, and organisers will face full legal accountability.

This decision comes in the wake of a tragic incident at the Shaun 101 Street Bash in Diepkloof, Soweto, where a 19-year-old was fatally shot as crowds dispersed.

It is revealed that three others were injured and hospitalised in the incident, which reportedly involved robbery and assault by alleged gang members, referred to as “Amapantsula”, leading to community retaliation.

“Our heartfelt condolences go to the family and loved ones of the young man. We stand in solidarity with them during this difficult time,” Tshwaku said.

He says that the event did not have official approval from the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD), which highlights that mandated safety protocols were not in place. Police visibility and patrols were also absent during and after the event.

Tshwaku emphasised that event organisers will be held accountable under the law. “No event can take place without approval from the JMPD and the City of Johannesburg. All events, regardless of type or size, must comply with the Safety at Sports and Recreational Events Act (SASREA) No. 2 of 2010 and city bylaws,” he said.

He added that the Joint Operations Committee (JOC) serves as the primary approval body, coordinating departments such as Emergency Management Services (EMS), JMPD, Disaster Management, and others to ensure events are safe for the public.
