As tributes continue to pour in for Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, his tragic death has become a sombre reminder of the widespread crime affecting South Africa.
The 40-year-old media personality and DJ was shot dead in Johannesburg’s CBD on Tuesday, December 16, near the corner of Von Wielligh and Commissioner Street, opposite the Carlton Centre.
DJ Warras was known for his outspoken stance against crime and his patriotism. In the weeks leading up to his death, he publicly reached out to ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba, urging action to reclaim Johannesburg’s inner city.
“Come to Joburg, please, Mphathi? There is a whole CBD here that needs a cleanup, a takeover and a mass deportation. We are waiting for you,” he wrote on social media.
Mashaba condemned the brutal killing, stating, “ActionSA believes that the criminal thugs responsible, who have no regard for human life, have declared war on law-abiding South Africans, particularly those who stand up against crime.”
“If they think they have stopped the fight to reclaim Johannesburg’s inner city, they are gravely mistaken. Now, more than ever, Johannesburg needs strong leadership to reclaim our city from criminals who operate with near impunity.”
The EFF also released a statement highlighting the broader societal issues underpinning the killing.
“Tragically, DJ Warras now joins a growing list of DJs, artists, and cultural workers gunned down across Gauteng and the country. This reflects a society drowning in violence, where criminals act with impunity. We call on the SAPS and JMPD to urgently prioritise this investigation and ensure the swift arrest and prosecution of those responsible.”
Political leader, Mbuyiseni Ndlozi said this murder is yet another episode of South Africa’s culture of violence.
“Our heartfelt condolences, especially to his family. May his soul rest in peace and his killers be brought to swift justice,” said Ndlozi on social media.
BOSA leader, Mmusi Maimane added, “The brazen murder of DJ Warras in broad daylight is a shock to all South Africans. We have lost one of the most outspoken and patriotic voices in our country. We call upon SAPS to act quickly to arrest the hitmen and those who ordered this attack. We cannot be ruled by thugs or governed through intimidation.”
Friends and colleagues in the entertainment industry have also shared heartfelt memories, praising DJ Warras for the lasting impact he had on those around him and the industry as a whole.
Many have highlighted that his death not only leaves a void in the South African entertainment scene but also reignites urgent conversations about crime, safety, and justice in the country.
