Security warning ahead of Easter holidays: What many homeowners are forgetting

Saturday Star Reporter|Published

A security warning has been issued ahead of the Easter holidays, as many families prepare to leave their homes unattended for travel and celebrations.

Security solutions provider, Fidelity Services Group is urging residents to take precautionary measures, warning that holiday periods often see an increase in opportunistic crime targeting empty homes.

“Holiday periods are a special time for families, but they can also present opportunities if homes are left unattended,” said Charnel Hattingh, Group Head of Marketing and Communications.

“A few simple checks before you leave can go a long way in giving you peace of mind.”

Key safety measures

Residents heading away this Easter are advised to take the following steps

Keep travel plans private: Avoid sharing details on social media before or during your trip.

Check security systems: Ensure alarms are working and all entry points are properly secured.

Stay connected with neighbours: Ask someone you trust to collect mail or monitor your home.

Improve visibility: Use outdoor lighting or motion sensors to deter criminals.

Plan for emergencies: Ensure security providers can access your property if needed.

Be cautious while travelling: Keep valuables out of sight and park in secure areas.

Report suspicious activity: Alert security services or police if anything unusual is noticed.

Hattingh also emphasised the importance of safety awareness for children who may remain at home, including keeping doors locked, not allowing strangers inside, and knowing emergency contacts.

“Security is a shared responsibility. When communities stay aware and support one another, everyone benefits,” she said.

The warning comes as thousands of South Africans prepare for the Easter break, with security experts urging early preparation to avoid unnecessary risks.
