Durban fans called to break ball record

If all goes according to plan, the country will be able to add one more triumph to its already long list of achievements during the World Cup - that of the most consecutive passes of a football.

It is hoped that Durban's World Cup-crazy fans can kick SA into the record books when it attempts to break the Guinness Record for the most consecutive football passes at North Beach tomorrow.

An initiative started by consulting company Sigma International, with support from the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the city has to beat China's record of 557 passes, set in 2002.

The attempt was being made before the much-anticipated Portugal-Brazil match at Moses Mabhida Stadium at 4pm on Friday, said Sigma International's chief operating officer, Akash Singh.

"We wanted to create excitement and hype around the World Cup, and show our city and our beachfront off to the world," he said.

Singh said a minimum of 1 000 people were needed to break the record. Standing face to face, participants would pass the ball over a distance of 12m without stopping or kicking it more than once. "It is not that hard to do. We will be setting up at around 6pm (Thursday) and we will run practice sessions."

A Guinness World Records adjudicator would be present and would only allow three attempts, said Singh. Participants should be at the northern entrance of the Fifa Fan Park on North Beach by 8am. They must be over 15, fit and able to pass the ball over 12m. People are encouraged to wear Bafana jerseys. Participants will receive a certificate and photo to commemorate the event.
