Athletics South Africa (ASA) has refuted reports claiming it had lost its long-standing partnership with SuperSport.
Over the weekend, media outlets suggested that ASA-sanctioned events – including the Comrades Marathon, the National Championships, and the ASA Grand Prix series – would now air on SABC platforms (SABC 1, SABC Sport, and SABC Plus).
The initial agreement between ASA and SuperSport was signed in 2022 and was due to run for four years, meaning the contract had naturally reached its conclusion.
ASA spokesperson Sifiso Cele clarified the situation to IOL Sport on Monday:
“The broadcast contract between ASA and SuperSport officially ended in 2025. That then opened new negotiations for a new broadcast partnership with SuperSport and including the SABC,” said Cele.
“As I respond to you, I am not aware of any deal reached with any broadcaster. Any finalised deal will then be publicly announced accordingly.”
Fans of South African athletics will have to wait for an official announcement on where major events will be broadcast, as the governing body works to secure a deal that ensures maximum coverage for its competitions.
