It’s not often that a commentator is unable to complete their duties during a cricket tournament due to injury, but that’s exactly the case for Proteas legend Dale Steyn.
The 42-year-old has been a revelation in the commentary booth at this tournament, most notably during South Africa’s infamous encounter with Afghanistan, which required two Super Overs.
Steyn did not hold back during that stint, and it was reminiscent of his playing days when he was the star on the field.
Steyn will now return to South Africa to undergo surgery.
“So unfortunately I’ve had to come home early. I’m having shoulder surgery tomorrow, which has forced me to miss the remainder of the World Cup in terms of commentary,” said Steyn on X.
“Bummed, but that’s life. Thanks again, India. See you in the IPL.”
Responding to a question on X from another former Proteas player, Herschelle Gibbs, on how the injury happened, Steyn said: “Tore my pec [pectoral] in the Legends League… Clearly, my body is saying something to me.”
South Africa, having already qualified for the Super Eight, take on the United Arab Emirates in a dead rubber Group D clash in Delhi.
South Africa have qualified for the next stage of the competition with a game to spare after victories over Canada, Afghanistan, and New Zealand.
The Proteas already know their fixtures for the Super Eight, with a rematch of the 2024 T20 World Cup final against India lying in wait in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
